Popular Mobile Phones for Games

Posted on February 27th, 2008 in Mobile Ubiquity by Muse

MobileRated published a news item showing the 25 most popular mobile phones used for downloading free cellular games.  While some lament the uptake of cellular games, there is no denying that some people are playing mobile games - plenty of mobile games.  Over 1 million downloads a month at MobileRated.  It is interesting to see which phones are most popular with game players.

Nokia netted 43% usage from the top 25 phones and grabbed the top 3 spots with the Nokia 5300, 6300, and N73 models.  Nokia, much like Apple, is a company that seems to understand the pulse of their customers and serves up products they like.

My current favourite phone is the Sony Ericsson W810i which ranked 4th in the MobileRated listing.  While generally considered a music phone, the W810i is a reasonable game phone.  The controls are a bit tiny but functional, it has a nice screen and lots of memory, and excellent tools for downloading games from PCs.

The top 10 devices are:

  1. Nokia 5300 (4.36%)
  2. Nokia 6300 (4.22%)
  3. Nokia N73 (3.63%)
  4. SonyEricsson W810i (2.71%)
  5. Nokia 5200 (2.48%)
  6. SonyEricsson W300i (2.28%)
  7. Nokia 6620 (2.27%)
  8. SonyEricsson K750i (2.24%)
  9. Nokia N95 (2.02%)
  10. SonyEricsson K800i (1.72%)
